My Today

Ladies and gentlemen,

Today I will describe my day from start till finish.

Woke up at 6.15 am, made sure my puppies at home got nursed and milked. Played with the dogs. Its 6.45, took a bath, iron my clothes. 7.00 off to work.

Dad wanted to have breakfast with me. I drove had breakfast at some coffeshop, coincendatally met a banker friend of me dad, had breakfast together. After much chit chat about economics and politics, off to work.

750 arrived at clinic, stomach ache, dont know what cause it, went to the loo. Look at Wendy before going in to the loo. Wendy is a hit by car golden retriever in critical care.

7.55 Felt relieved. Made my morning rounds. Did my case updates for all the dogs in the kennel. I was working the night before and the way things here, I am supposed to update the conditions of the animals. Stuck with one case, a GSD with chronic fever a month more already. You could call it fever of unknown origin. A good friend of mine, a fellow vet notice some else which I didn't notice, I'm glad she noticed that. Made a few mental notes and promised to read up more about it. Heat stress was high in my list of diffentials. Updates some more cases, checking up on the wound cleaning the staff did on on the dogs.

8.30 Gave the required injections to the animals.

8.45 Went to the cat room. Another senior colleague was helping me out there. Looked at Kitty. Kitty was an undiagnosed case which I handled. This was a though one. She hypersalivates everytime she got handled. Check on her drips. Tommorrow we will run a series of x-ray to get a better picture.

9.00 Sat down awhile to catch my breath. Thought about the Babesia slides I look yesterday and got puzzled. Decided to relax myself. Took out the Breed Pictures of Dogs Book and looked at the beautiful dogs. Never failed to relax me.

9.20 Went to surgery room. Watched a OHE, this OHE was special because the cat was dystocic and we used a hemostat to pulled the kittens out. The kittens were already dead. Then the surgeon decided to use a skin glue to glue the skin instead of using sutures. Well it stuck and looks very neat. The skin glue is a type of enzyme with rubber chemical stuff. Haven't read about the leaftlet yet.

10.20 Went to the front office. Handled a few cases. Mostly mange cases of skin with revisits.

11.40 No clients. Relaxed at the office. Looked at the fax machine. No fax.
Kitty owner came and ask for updates. Did the doctor assurance thinge. Damn, I'm good.

12.00 Other vets left for lunch. Another vet was on lunch duty, decided to helped him out for awhile.

12.00 Handled a vaccination case. peanuts. 12.10 Damn, the asthmatic dog arrived again. Brief the fellow veterinarian about the case, this case has been coming in daily for the past week with complaints of astmatic attacks at night. The vet on lunch duty have not seen the case. He repeated the treatments.

12.20 Just about to go back home. A client with her mom came to visit their dog, a post eye enucleation. Tried to sneak out unnoticed by them, but to late they noticed me. Started to ask me about their dog. Suddenly they ask me about their dog at home which was on heat, and ask me about dog pregnancy and why the mammary gland was swollen. Gave a brief lecture on Pseudopregnancy. Asked the owner to come back with their bitch for through check up.

1.00 At home, had lunch. 1.20 Watched TV 1.30 Left for work again

2.00 Arrived at work. Traffic congested. Surprisingly no cases. Read up on thoracic radiology.

2.50 Maggot wound case. At the region near the anus. Charged 35 bucks.

3.20 A sick dog came in with Respiratory tract infection. Crackles can be heard from the lungs. The owner doesn't know anything about dog care. The dog had puppies which it also brought along for vaccination. Fever. Discovered it had started to have hard pads on the nose and four paws. Just started.

Damn, Canine Distemper!. What to do? To treat or not to treat. Talk to another senior vet whether to treat or not to treat. Pondered on the fate of the puppies. Another senior vet handled the puppies and proceeded to vaccinate them anyway.

Treated the dog for the Respiratory tract problem. Gave sypmtomatic treatments. Really worried, Distemper had three days to develops. Have three days to hope.

Dog went back home.

Another associate vet had helped me gave the afternoon injections for the cats while I was busy handling the case. Thanks.

4.45. Made another round at the kennel. 4.50 Had a talk with my collegeus. Talked about horse racing industry and animal ethics. Time went fast.

5.30 Pack up and went back home. On the drive back tried to called my friend in KL but couldn't get through.

6.00 Slept on the couch until 7.30.

7.30 Had dinner with the family

8.00 Watched news.

8.30 Went shopping with the family. Bought over the hedge CD. Ate supper at Pizza hut.

10.30 Arrived home. Washed my clothes and Clorox my lab coat.

11.00 Wacthed Disc 1 of Over the hedge. Funny.

11.45 Remembered about updating my blog. Checked my email and stuff. Downloaded My hips don't lie by Shakira.

.... Geez.. Finish

My Working Domain

Well I started work in a small animal hospital in my hometown in Kuching, Sarawak. It is called City Veterinary centre. This is the best animal health care provider over here.

A little bit of history of the hospital. I did not know when it was established but I knew that this place was already here when I know about dogs which was almost twenty years ago.

The veterinarians and staff are wonderful people. Highly qualified and experinced. Most of them were the top students of the UPM Vet Faculty. I have learnt so much here. Years of experince and high case load of the hospital has really fine tune their diagnostic procedures. We have seven veterinarian and about ten vet technicians.

The case load here is very high. In my opinion it is much higher than UPM especially during Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Times goes by really fast and by the end of the day you are alread burned out. Let me describe the case load here, in one typical WEEK the place will have at least five Canine Parvovirus cases on Intensive Care, 3 Urinary tract Disease requiring Surgery, about 15 review of Urinary and Kidney Disease cases, 10 dental scaling, FLUTD about 5. Maggot wound about 5. Hit by Car with Surgery about 2-3. HBC conservative management about 10. Skin disease cases about 20+. Vaccination and deworming daily about 5-9. Abcesses draining about 7-10 cases per week. Diarrhoea and Inappetance 2-3 per day. Tick Fever 5 cases per week. Exotic animal cases about 2 per week. I didn't even mentioned about undiagnosed cases! We have more dog cases compare to cats.

Working hours is normally from 8-5pm daily, saturday is half day with 2 nights(7-8.30) per week and two alternate working Sundays. The pay is quite high. One of the highest starting basic pay in M'sia.

Expectation from the senior clinicians are quite high. So have to read often and update myself regularly.

I must say I enjoy myself here.
This is a good start for me.
